Don’t you miss the good old-fashioned “BAM! – PSSSST” blowout from tires of yore? Yeah, me, too.
For the second time in 4 years, I had a “blowout” on my right rear tire. The first time I was pulling a 30-foot trailer, on I-10 heading home to Phoenix just east of Indio. Imagine what an adventure that was!
The second time was just this past Saturday, this time on a surface street.
Again, the ‘forewarning’ came as a suddenly appearing low tire pressure light on my dashboard. Followed by an immediate crumbling sound as the tire totally fell apart.
Although the adventure wasn’t quite the nail biter it was on I-10, it had its challenges.
For one, the tire change guy couldn’t get the wheel off, so he bailed.
At least the tow truck guy had no trouble loading it up and hauling it over to my Discount Tire shop. Wouldn’t you know it – they’re closed on Sundays. Slightly worrisome about leaving my baby in a public parking lot for two nights. Especially since our neighborhood has been hit with catalytic converter thieves lately.
Soooo…first thing Monday morning I got a couple of new tires. Set me back ‘only’ $424. (Gee, I don’t remember how long ago – it seems like yesterday – I was getting tires for under $50 bucks each. Oh, I remember now. It was when gas was 25 cents a gallon – WAY back in the last century.)
Got my baby back now. Good to be a pick-up man again.
